Parul Bhargava Interview – CEO vCommission
Can you tell us a little bit about your background and how did you get started with affiliate marketing?
Parul: Hi, thank you for having me. I got started in affiliate marketing back in 2004 when it was a relatively new concept in India. At the time, I was working in digital marketing and saw an opportunity to start a home-grown affiliate network.
I co-founded vCommission in 2008 and since then, we have grown to become a global company with offices in the US, UK, and Dubai.
What do you think has been the key to your success?
Parul: I think the key to our success has been our focus on working with branded advertisers and establishing long-term relationships with them.
We have also been very focused on providing guidance and support to our affiliates to help them be successful. And, of course, we have been very consistent in our approach to affiliate marketing over the years.
Speaking of consistency, that’s a topic you mentioned earlier. Can you tell us more about why you think consistency is so important in affiliate marketing?
Parul: Yes, definitely. Consistency is important because affiliate marketing is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It takes time and effort to build up a successful affiliate marketing business.
So, it’s important to keep at it and keep putting in the work, even when you’re not seeing immediate results. Over time, if you are consistent and persistent, you will start to see the rewards.
What are some other tips you have for affiliate marketers who want to be successful?
Parul: One of the biggest mistakes I see affiliate marketers make is not doing enough research on the companies they work with.
It’s important to work with established companies that have a good track record of paying their affiliates on time. That way, you can be confident that you will be paid for the work you do, even if it takes a little longer than expected.

Can you tell us about any challenges you faced as an entrepreneur and how you overcame them?
Parul: One of the biggest challenges I faced early on was getting vCommission off the ground. It was a new concept in India at the time, and we had to work hard to convince advertisers to give us a chance.
But we were persistent and kept at it. And over time, we were able to establish ourselves as a trusted affiliate network.
Another challenge we faced was expanding globally. We had to navigate different regulations and cultural differences, but we were able to do so by partnering with local experts and building relationships with clients in each market.
We were persistent and kept at it.

What advice do you have for young entrepreneurs in India who are just starting out?
Parul: My advice would be to stay focused and stay committed. Entrepreneurship is not easy, and there will be challenges along the way. But if you are passionate about what you’re doing and willing to put in the work, you can be successful.
It’s also important to surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors and advisors who can help guide you along the way.

How did you bounce back to your goal when your business went through different stages?
Parul: So, I think again, the whole crux is consistency. The whole crux is that we should keep doing whatever we are doing.
Ups and downs are a part of every business, be it a small business when we just start it or when the business is fully grown. And the challenges that we face are also the same proportion as that of our business.
So, the only mantra that I would say that I believe in is, persistence and consistency. Keep doing what you are doing. Like how we celebrate our wins, we should also be celebrating our losses because, through them, we get a learning of what not to do. I think that is the most important thing in a business.
Such things also make us humble because when we start working at a young age and earn money, very soon, we reach a level where we think we have done something in life.
And when we have downs in life, they make us humble. So if we are working with someone going through a down phase, even then we talk to them respectfully and be helpful towards them as we have been through a similar situation in life.
Yeah, that is important. Absolutely. It shapes our whole character. And I think, be it any business or life, nothing can exist without low phases. So, being consistent is important, Not only in India but globally as well.

What do you think is the X-factor of vCommission? There are a lot of affiliate networks in India and globally. But what sets vCommission apart from them?
Parul: When we first started, our x-factor was that we would make the payments in net 30 days while other networks that started in India were making the payments in net 90 or net 120 days.
And the trend in India was that even after the invoice was raised, your amount could be changed. For example, your commission is Rs. 1 Lakh, but you will not be paid that much amount. You will only be paid Rs. 70,000. Without any genuine reason!
So, our x-factor at that time that exists even today is that, if we finalize or commit any amount, we never go back on that. Even if we get the money from the advertisers or not, if the invoice is raised from vCommission, that money would definitely be released on time.
What is the value of “CELEBRATION” that you mentioned earlier?
Parul: Yes, our company has a policy. It is a value actually, i.e., CELEBRATION. It aims at us celebrating our losses and our faults as well because they give us great learning lessons that would help us at some point in life.
We learn from our mistakes and ensure that we don’t repeat them in the future. This value has helped us in our journey and is still an integral part of our culture.
We learn from our mistakes and ensure that we don’t repeat them in the future.

What are the other factors that have contributed to vCommission’s success over the years?
Parul: Another factor that sets us apart is our consistent journey because we have been in the industry for such a long time. We have made our own set of rules that we would want to work with so and so companies.
Like there are a lot of offers that you would not find on vCommission. The reason behind that is, somewhere we might feel that we wouldn’t get money from them or there could be a problem that could arise due to it.
So, we have a very strong credit control that we work on. This is something that we have learned with time. After a lot of time, working with a lot of advertisers, there were many such advertisers who did not pay us while we still made sure to pay all our affiliates.
We believe in keeping our commitments, and we work hard to maintain the trust that our clients and affiliates have in us.

How has vCommission adapted to the changing landscape of the affiliate marketing industry?
Parul: We have always believed in staying ahead of the curve and adapting to changes as they come and have constantly worked towards improving our technology, our platform, and our processes.
Our team is constantly researching and analyzing the latest trends in the industry, and we use that knowledge to improve our offerings to clients and affiliates. We have also expanded our presence globally, which has helped us to diversify our client base and work with a wider range of advertisers.
What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs who are looking to start their own affiliate marketing business?
Parul: My advice would be to focus on consistency and persistence. Ups and downs are a part of every business, and the challenges that we face are also the same proportion as that of our business.
The only mantra that I believe in is persistence and consistency. Keep doing what you are doing, and learn from your losses.
Celebrate your losses because they give you a learning on what not to do. Being consistent is important, and learning and developing yourself through it is equally important.
