Top 9 Best VPN Providers in India (2026)

1) Surfshark – Best VPN in Budget

Kripesh’s Rating – 4.3/5

Surfshark has secured the No. 1 spot in 2026 due to significant improvements. This VPN is based in the Netherlands and was launched in 2018 by Vytautas Kaziukonis. It merged with Nord Security in February 2022. It stands out mainly for its affordability.

Pros of Surfshark

Stable Speed

Surfshark delivers a stable and uninterrupted connection. In my tests, I observed only a 17% drop in download speed (165 Mbps) and a 43% decrease in upload speed (115 Mbps) from a baseline of 200 Mbps. On international servers, the speed drop remained within 30%.

Unlimited Device Connections

Unlike many VPNs, Surfshark offers simultaneous connections for unlimited devices. You can connect as many devices as you want with a single Surfshark subscription.

Affordable Pricing

Surfshark provides the most affordable plans. Their 2-year plan is priced at  ₹4640 ($49.84) or ₹5684 ($61.04) with antivirus, and includes an additional 4 months of free access.

Best Ad Blocker

CleanWeb is a unique feature that acts as an ad and malware blocker. It protects you from annoying pop-ups, data breaches, and video ads, ensuring a safer browsing experience. Among all VPNs, Surfshark’s ad blocker performed the best in my testing, and it also works as a browser extension.

RAM Servers

All Surfshark’s servers are 100% diskless for maximum data privacy. User data is automatically erased upon disconnection

Transparent Privacy

Surfshark’s privacy policy is clear and comprehensive, with all data collection practices outlined in an easy-to-find statement. It has also introduced post-quantum protection on WireGuard.

Audited No-Log Policy

Surfshark’s no-logs policy has been audited multiple times. In November 2025, Deloitte conducted a no-logs audit and found no issues. Additionally, in January 2026, SecuRing conducted an infrastructure audit.

Modern User Interface

The user interface is modern and beginner-friendly. The navigation bars are easy to find, and all important features (VPN protocol, kill switch, split tunneling) are easily accessible within the settings menu.

Alternative ID

Surfshark has introduced Alternative ID, which provides a virtual US phone number and temporary email address. These IDs help in private account sign-ups and newsletter subscriptions, masking original details.

Antivirus Upgrade

Surfshark has upgraded its antivirus with powerful features: webcam protection, 24/7 malware defense, customizable security options, and a spyware shield. It now safeguards up to five devices.

Split Tunneling on Mac

Bypasser, Surfshark’s split tunneling feature, was previously available only on Android, iOS, and Windows. It is now available on Mac devices as well.

Infrastructure improvements

This VPN provider has introduced several improvements. Surfshark has rolled out Everlink (self-healing connections), route optimization (FastTrack), 100 Gbps servers, and network upgrades aimed at improving stability and throughput.

Cons of Surfshark

Netherland-based Jurisdiction

Surfshark is headquartered in the Netherlands, part of the 9-Eyes intelligence alliance. While the country is known for its privacy-friendly policies, membership in this alliance raises concerns about potential data sharing during national security emergencies.

Polarized Support Experience

This VPN provider offers 24/7 live chat, email support, and a comprehensive knowledge base. However, customer reviews are mixed. Some users report excellent support, while others find it unhelpful. In some cases, accounts may be temporarily locked if suspicious activity is detected.

IP Address Collection

Surfshark’s privacy policy states that it collects minimal connection information, such as a user ID or IP address. While this data is deleted within 15 minutes of session termination, the necessity of its initial collection remains unclear to me.

No Audit in Recent Years

Surfshark’s last no-logs policy audit was conducted in December 2023. Despite significant security upgrades, it’s high time for a fresh audit this year.

2) NordVPN – Best Overall VPN

Kripesh’s Rating – 4.4/5

NordVPN is a well-known VPN provider, introduced in 2012. It is based in Panama, a jurisdiction outside the 14 Eyes alliance. NordVPN is already popular among privacy enthusiasts for its reliable cybersecurity products, including NordPass, NordLayer, Saily eSIM, and NordLocker.

Pros of Nord VPN

Excellent Speed

When tested with a baseline speed of 200 Mbps, NordVPN achieved download speeds of 152 Mbps (24% decrease) and upload speeds of 90 Mbps (55% decrease) on an Indian server. When connected to a US server, I noticed only a 30–40% drop in speed.

Most Audited No-Logs Policy

NordVPN’s no-logs policy has been audited six times, more than any other VPN. The most recent audit was conducted by Deloitte Lithuania at the end of 2025. All auditors confirmed a clean track record.

Highest Standard of Privacy

All 9,000+ NordVPN servers are fully diskless, meaning any data is wiped as soon as you disconnect from the VPN. Plus, they introduced post-quantum encryption last year, which helps protect devices against potential quantum computer attacks.

Advanced Protocol

NordVPN offers NordWhisper and NordLynx as specialized protocols. NordLynx is built on WireGuard for speed, low latency, and efficiency, while NordWhisper is for restricted networks where normal VPN traffic may be blocked or filtered.”

Expanded Server Network

Earlier, NordVPN had 7,169 servers across 111 countries. As of 2026, it has expanded its network to over 9,000 servers across 188+ countries. It also offers specialized servers for P2P, obfuscation, and streaming.

Best Gaming Experience

On Indian servers, latency remained below 50 ms. NordVPN is reliable for smooth, buffer-free online gaming. Plus, it offers DDoS protection, which helps safeguard against attacks during competitive matches.

Ad Blocker

Threat Protection Pro is a prominent feature of NordVPN. It offers all-in-one protection from web trackers, URL blockers, DNS filtering, malicious ads, viruses, vulnerable software, and more.

Excellent Streaming Performance

NordVPN delivers a top-tier streaming experience. Users can access all major streaming platforms from India (Zee5, Hotstar, SonyLiv, Amazon) and the US (Netflix, Amazon Prime US, BBC).

Feature-rich VPN

Apart from standard VPN features, NordVPN includes tools like Dark Web Monitoring, Meshnet, and SmartPlay. Dark Web Monitoring helps protect against data leaks on hacker forums and dark web sites. Meshnet enables secure local area network (LAN) connections for fast file transfers between devices.

Cons of Nord VPN

Basic Desktop Interface

The desktop interface feels dated compared to some competitors. While some features (Meshnet, Threat Protection) have dedicated buttons, essentials like split tunneling hide in settings, creating confusion.

Server Compromised

In March 2018, one of NordVPN’s Finnish servers was compromised. While the company was aware of the incident, it took them six months to publicly disclose it.

No Port Forwarding

NordVPN doesn’t support P2P with port forwarding. While this improves security, it can limit activities like hosting game servers or using certain torrenting apps.

Customer Support Responsiveness

NordVPN offers 24/7 support, but response times can be slow. Many users report difficulties resolving complex issues.

For a VPN alone, I recommend the NordVPN Basic 2-year plan, $78.96 (₹7352). For a VPN with antivirus and a password manager, the NordVPN Plus 2-year plan at $93.36 (₹8693) is the best option. Using my link grants you an additional 4 months, extending your subscription to 28 months.

Conclusion

NordVPN provides excellent privacy features, NordLynx protocol, a Double VPN, NordPass (a cross-platform password manager and data breach scanner) & NordLocker (1 TB of encrypted cloud storage), etc. Additionally, features like Meshnet, Dark Web Monitoring, SmartPlay, Onion over Tor, and MFA protection offer a valuable bonus.

Among all our tested VPNs, it offers the fastest speeds and the lowest ping rate. Their no-log policy has also been regularly audited, and their overall track record is clean. While the desktop interface is admittedly basic, and they experienced a single server compromise in the past, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

Overall, NordVPN is a powerful all-in-one VPN solution. It’s a good option for both everyday users and advanced use cases.

3) ExpressVPN – Best For Traveling

Kripesh’s Rating – 4.2/5

ExpressVPN was once considered a premium VPN with relatively expensive plans. However, in recent years, its pricing has become more competitive with other top-tier VPN providers. The company was originally founded by tech entrepreneurs Peter Burchhardt and Dan Pomerantz in 2009 in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. In 2021, it was acquired by Kape Technologies.

Pros of ExpressVPN

Low Latency

ExpressVPN delivers excellent speeds, with 140 Mbps download and 129 Mbps upload on Indian servers. Even on international servers, I observed only a 20–30% drop in speed. This minimal slowdown is largely due to the upgraded Lightway protocol (Lightway Turbo) and 10 Gbps servers.

Audited No-Logs Policy

ExpressVPN’s zero-logs policy has been independently audited more than 20 times by reputable firms such as KPMG, PwC, and Nettitude. Most recently, in June 2025, KPMG examined its TrustedServer technology and verified its privacy policy claims.

Court-Proven Privacy Policy

In 2017, during a Turkish investigation, ExpressVPN servers were seized. However, no customer connection logs were found, reinforcing the credibility of its no-logs policy. Plus, ExpressVPN has introduced post-quantum cryptography to help protect user data against potential future decryption by quantum computers.

Better Streaming Experience

With low ping rates below 150 ms and virtual servers in India, ExpressVPN supports major streaming platforms for both Indian and US content. Users can enjoy buffer-free streaming on Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney+, Hotstar, Zee5, and SonyLiv.

Easy User Interface

The user interface of ExpressVPN is simple and easy to use. Essential features like the kill switch, ad blocker, and split tunneling are easily accessible within the ‘Options’ menu. The apps are beginner-friendly across desktop, mobile, and router platforms.

ExpressVPN Keys

While not as advanced as 1Password, ExpressVPN Keys is a convenient option for users. This password manager securely stores unlimited passwords, credit card details, and notes across devices. It even provides alerts for data breaches and weak passwords.

Strict Obfuscation

ExpressVPN is one of the most reliable VPNs for bypassing the ‘Great Firewall’ and strict censorship in regions like the Middle East. Its obfuscation technology activates automatically when you’re in China, Iran, or Russia. No manual configuration is required from the user.

Device Limit Increased

Previously, ExpressVPN allowed users to connect up to 6 devices simultaneously. In 2025, the limit was increased to 8 devices. As of 2026, it supports up to 10 devices on the Basic plan, 12 devices on the Advanced plan, and 14 devices on the Pro plan.

Ad Blocker

Introduced this year, ExpressVPN’s ad blocker effectively blocks most display ads. However, the ad blocker relies on a predefined block list.

Shuffle IP

For enhanced user protection, ExpressVPN continuously changes the user’s IP address in the background. It also offers dedicated IP addresses at an additional cost.

Cons of ExpressVPN

Expensive Plans

Compared to NordVPN or Surfshark, ExpressVPN comes with a higher price tag. The 2-year plan costs around ₹12018, nearly triple the cost of Surfshark.

No Dedicated IP

ExpressVPN currently doesn’t offer dedicated IP addresses. This might be a drawback for businesses or individuals requiring more control over their online presence.

Kape Technologies Acquisition

ExpressVPN was acquired by Kape Technologies in Sept, 2021. The organization was previously known as Crossrider, a malware developer. So, the acquisition has raised security concerns because of the parent company’s past reputation.

No Advanced Options

ExpressVPN is not a tinkerer’s VPN. There’s no generic port forwarding, fewer low-level controls, and some advanced deployment methods are no longer available. For power users, it does not give you the same deep controls for DNS, routing, and encryption tuning.

Streaming Unreliable

This VPN can unblock major Indian and international OTT platforms such as Zee5, Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Hotstar. However, streaming performance can be inconsistent and may interrupt or stop mid-session. In some cases, you may need to switch servers to continue watching.

Conclusion

ExpressVPN is a top-tier VPN service that stands out with its RAM-based servers, obfuscation technology, multi-device access, and strict no-logs policy. The provider has upgraded its proprietary Lightway protocol to Lightway Turbo, contributing to solid performance on Indian and US servers.

Even though the acquisition by Kape Technologies has raised concerns among users, I haven’t found noticeable changes to ExpressVPN’s privacy policy or products, unlike other Kape-owned VPNs. Plus, the introduction of 2-year plans has made its pricing more competitive.

If you’re comfortable with Kape Technologies’ ownership and are willing to invest, ExpressVPN can be a strong choice. It is particularly well-suited for users seeking a reliable, premium VPN that is easy to use and operates seamlessly in the background.

4) Proton VPN – Best FREE VPN

Kripesh’s Rating – 4.0/5

ProtonVPN consistently ranks as the number one among the best free VPNs in India. It’s a Geneva, Switzerland-based VPN provider, launched in 2017. While its free plan is highly regarded, ProtonVPN’s paid plans offer additional perks such as faster speeds and Stealth Mode. Let’s explore whether the paid version is as good as the free one.

Pros of Proton VPN

Impressive Speed

ProtonVPN delivered speeds of 184 Mbps (8% drop) for download and 108 Mbps (46% drop) for upload during tests on the Indian server. On the US server, the download and upload speeds were 169 Mbps and 71 Mbps, respectively. In both cases, the speeds were even higher than NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN.

WireGuard Support

WireGuard is the most advanced VPN protocol, known for its speed and security. As a result, ProtonVPN is able to minimize VPN-induced latency while delivering fast and secure connections.

Recently Audited

ProtonVPN’s no-logs policy has been audited four times. The most recent audit was conducted in August 2025 by Securitum. Across all audits, ProtonVPN’s technical architecture has been thoroughly reviewed, and no vulnerabilities or data logging have been identified.

Secure Core servers

If you need to use a VPN in highly restricted countries like China, a service that offers a double-hop connection is ideal. ProtonVPN provides Secure Core specialized servers, which route traffic through multiple servers in privacy-friendly countries (Iceland, Switzerland, and Sweden) before sending data to the final destination.

Transparent Service

ProtonVPN’s headquarters are in Switzerland, a country renowned for having strong privacy laws in the world. Its privacy policy is transparent and well-written. Additionally, the ProtonVPN app is open source, making it available for public review.

Modern User Interface

The user interface of ProtonVPN is clean and modern. The developers have replaced the older, crowded look with a simpler layout. Its Linux app has also received a GTK4 modernization, along with improvements in UI stability.

Ad blocker

Netsheild Ad Blocker is available for users. This feature uses DNS filtering to speed up your browsing. It protects your devices by blocking privacy-invading ads, preventing malware, and stopping trackers.

Servers Increased

As of 2026, ProtonVPN offers a higher number of servers than Surfshark, NordVPN, and ExpressVPN. It has over 18,600 servers across 129 countries worldwide, with strong coverage in the UK and the USA.

P2P with Port Forwarding

Proton VPN supports peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing. With port forwarding, you can connect to more peers, which can improve speeds and provide more stable connections.

Cons Of Proton VPN

Unreliable Streaming

Proton VPN unblocks platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu. But users have to hop multiple servers to find one that ins’t balcakelisted for streaming. I also encountered frequent Google CAPTCHA checks on multiple platforms.

No RAM Servers

Unlike some premium VPNs, ProtonVPN does not offer RAM-based servers. The provider ensures user privacy through its audited no-logs policy and strong AES-256 encryption. But RAM-only servers ensure that user data is automatically wiped whenever the system is rebooted.

Stealth Mode Not Working

ProtonVPN’s Stealth protocol is designed to help bypass restrictions in countries where VPN usage is limited. However, it may not work reliably in China and may not always provide full anonymity.

Expensive Pricing

The 2-year subscription plan costs over ₹7372, which can be a barrier for some users. You might find more affordable subscription plans with comparable features from other premium VPN providers.

IP Address Storage by ProtonMail

ProtonMail’s (another product under the same ownership) previous privacy policy clearly stated no default IP address storage. However, they did log the IP address of a French activist upon request from Swiss authorities. This incident led to a change in their privacy statement, which now clarifies that while they rarely log IP addresses, they may do so if legally compelled.

Conclusion

ProtonVPN is a strong contender in the VPN market. It offers impressive speeds on servers in India and the USA. Like NordVPN, it supports up to 10 simultaneous device connections and includes features such as ad and tracker blocking.

Plus, its Stealth mode helps bypass censorship and restrictions. While the free plan has long been popular, the paid plans have now become highly competitive as well. However, there are some drawbacks, including inconsistent streaming performance, concerns around privacy policy changes, and the lack of RAM-based servers.

Overall, ProtonVPN is an excellent choice for privacy-conscious users seeking audited, open-source, no-logs protection. It is particularly well-suited for journalists, activists, and remote workers who require Secure Core double-hop routing, as well as users interested in torrenting and P2P support across 120+ countries.

5) NymVPM

Kripesh’s Rating – 4.0/5

Nym Technologies is a Switzerland-based organization that launched this VPN. It is built on a decentralized, open-source mixnet network. The technical architecture is quite different from that of other VPN providers. NymVPN was fully launched in March 2025 and has already proven useful to over 50,000 users.

nymvpn logo

Pros of NymVPN

Mixnet architecture

Mixnet architecture splits data traffic into packets and routes them through multiple independent nodes. As a result, Nym’s noise-generating mixnet makes the deanonymization of user identity more difficult.

Zero-knowledge network

Unlike the no data logging policy of other VPNs, a zero-knowledge network ensures no single operator can view your complete identity or activity. Plus, NymVPN’s apps are open source, which improves transparency.

Anonymous Accounts & Payments

Nym allows users to log in using a 24-word passphrase generated during subscription. The service also supports anonymous payment methods, so you don’t need to reveal credit card details.

Based in Switzerland

Switzerland is known for its strong privacy protections. It is also outside major intelligence-sharing alliances. So, providers are not generally bound to share data in response to government requests.

Multi-Hop Connection

NymVPN provides traffic obfuscation by default. It offers two connection modes: Fast Mode uses a 2-hop connection, while Anonymous Mode routes traffic through a 5-hop mixnet path.

Simple Interface

The home screen includes only essential controls, while more advanced options are located in the Settings menu. Overall, the app is very beginner-friendly.

Cons Of NymVPN

Audit Concerns

NymVPN has undergone four security audits. However, audits conducted by Cure53 and Oak Security identified severe to critical vulnerabilities in the backend infrastructure and cryptographic implementation.

Slow Speeds

Since NymVPN routes data through multiple independent nodes, it takes longer to establish connections compared to traditional VPN services. This results in higher latency, making it feel slow for regular browsing.

Inconsistent Streaming Support

NymVPN struggles with unblocking streaming platforms like Amazon Prime, Hotstar, and SonyLiv. Even when it does work, slow speeds result in an inconsistent streaming experience in my test.

Missing Split Tunneling

The Windows and macOS versions currently do not support split tunneling. This feature is only available on the Android app, meaning desktop users cannot select specific apps or traffic to bypass the VPN connection.

Conclusion

NymVPN is a powerful but new security solution. We can think of it as an evolution of Tor, addressing privacy challenges that Tor has not fully solved. Its decentralized, noise-generating mixnet architecture is designed to provide maximum privacy and strong protection against surveillance.

Instead of traditional servers, NymVPN uses over 600 independent nodes across 70+ countries. Traffic is obfuscated by default and routed through two to five nodes, enhancing anonymity. Plus, users get support for up to 10 devices, a system-wide kill switch, an ad blocker, and other essential features.

However, due to its decentralized design, speeds are relatively slow. It’s not the fastest VPN, but it prioritizes security. As a result, NymVPN is best suited for privacy-first users such as journalists and activists, especially in high-censorship environments.

It may not be ideal for regular users who need a VPN for gaming, streaming, or general browsing. Before committing, you can try it with a 7-day free trial.

6) Private VPN

Kripesh’s Rating – 3.8/5

PrivateVPN was initially a small VPN provider, launched in 2009. However, in June 2022, Miss Group, an international web hosting company known for brands like StableHost, acquired it. It operates a limited number of servers across 50+ countries globally.

privatevpn logo

Pros of Private VPN

No-Log VPN

PrivateVPN does not collect user data, website logs, or any connection logs. This ensures your anonymity in the online world.

P2P with Port Forwarding

PrivateVPN is an affordable option that allows P2P file sharing on all of its 200+ servers. Additionally, it supports port forwarding along with a SOCKS5 proxy, which can help enable more efficient connections and improved performance.

Stealth Mode

Obfuscated servers help bypass censorship in highly restricted countries. PrivateVPN provides this functionality through its Stealth mode. So, Stealth mode in PrivateVPN is effective in China and Iran.

Free Dedicated IP

Most paid VPNs charge you extra to get a dedicated IP address, useful for remote access. PrivateVPN offers dynamic dedicated IP services with their standard plans without any extra cost. These IPs are limited to 14 specific OpenVPN‑based server locations.

Easy Refund

PrivateVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee after 7 days of free trial. During this period, if you’re not satisfied with the service, their support team generally accepts and processes refund requests without much difficulty.

Virtual and Physical Servers in India

PrivateVPN is the only VPN on our list that offers virtual and physical servers in India. You can connect to the Bangalore location to access a virtual server or choose the Mumbai location for a physical server.

Low Ping

Since PrivateVPN operates physical servers in India, it delivers lower ping times when connected to them. So, you can expect a smoother gaming and streaming experience.

Cons of Private VPN

Small Server Network

PrivateVPN has a smaller server network, with only 200 servers spread across 63 locations, with limited coverage in Asian and African regions. So, user may not find a server in their desired location for optimal speed.

No Log Policy Not Audited

As of 2026, while other VPNs have undergone three to four security audits, PrivateVPN has not conducted any audit to date. So, even if they claim not to log user data, it’s unverified.

Sweden-based Jurisdiction

PrivateVPN is headquartered in Sweden, which is part of the 14 Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance. This means the company could be subject to legal requests from authorities to share user data, depending on applicable laws and jurisdiction.

Slow Speed

Outside India, PrivateVPN delivered below-average speeds during my testing. I recorded download speeds of around 48 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 75 Mbps on US servers. This noticeable drop (>70%) may lead to buffering or reduced streaming quality.

Poor User Interface

The user interface is less feature-rich compared to other VPNs. The home screen only displays connect/disconnect options, and all other features are buried within the “Settings” menu. Many features still require manual configuration.

Longer Subscription Plan

Previously, PrivateVPN’s best plan was available for 12 months. Now, the minimum commitment for the best deal is 36 months. Users have to pay $72 upfront, which might be a financial burden.

Lack of WireGuard Protocol

Private VPN comes with OpenVPN, IPsec, PPTP, and IKEv2 VPN protocols. Unfortunately, it currently doesn’t offer the WireGuard protocol, which is known for its speed and security benefits.

Pricing

PrivateVPN1 month3 months3 years

I wouldn’t recommend going with a monthly plan at ₹919 ($9.90), the most expensive option. Instead, I recommend the 36-month plan at  ₹6686 ($72). This reduces the monthly cost to just ₹186, saving you 85% using my link.

Conclusion

PrivateVPN was once considered a reliable VPN provider prior to 2022. However, compared to other VPN providers in 2026, this VPN service hasn’t upgraded much. It still some unique advantages, but there are also several drawbacks.

Its speed performance is average, the server network is relatively small, and the user interface feels basic. The VPN operates under Sweden’s jurisdiction, and it lacks advanced features like split tunneling, built-in ad blocking, and a modern WireGuard protocol.

Still, there are three reasons to consider PrivateVPN in 2026. It may be a suitable option if you specifically need a dynamic dedicated IP at no extra cost, P2P support with port forwarding, or Stealth mode functionality for China.

7) Private Internet Access

Kripesh’s Rating – 3.6/5

Private Internet Access (PIA) is one of the oldest VPN providers, launched in 2010. It was originally founded under London Trust Media, but ownership was later transferred to Kape Technologies in 2019. As of now, it claims to have over 35,000 servers across 91 countries worldwide.

Private Internet Access

Pros of Private Internet Access

Snooze Functionality

A unique feature, Snooze allows you to temporarily pause the VPN connection for a set period. Once the time elapses, PIA VPN automatically reconnects to the same server.

P2P Support with Port Forwarding

PIA VPN allows P2P file sharing and supports popular torrent clients like BitTorrent and qBittorrent. With the port forwarding feature, you can connect to more peers and achieve faster download speeds.

Audited No-Logs Policy

PIA follows a strict no-logs policy. Hence, it does not track or store any user data that could identify your online activity. The VPN has undergone three independent audits by Deloitte in 2022, 2024, and 2025. None of them identified any major security vulnerabilities.

Court-Proven Privacy Policy

In 2018, during the Ross M. Colby case, PIA was legally ordered to provide user data linked to a specific IP address. However, the investigation reportedly found no user data logs on PIA’s servers that could identify the user, supporting its no-logs claims.

Free Cloud Storage

PIA provides 500 GB of free cloud storage on pCloud for one year. However, this free feature is not included with their monthly subscription plan.

Split Tunneling on MacOS

The split tunneling feature allows users to route less-trustworthy applications through a VPN connection while maintaining a regular connection for others. Unlike NordVPN or Surfshark, PIA offers this functionality even on macOS.

Open-Source Apps with Advanced Settings

PIA publishes its VPN source code on GitHub, making it open for public review. Its desktop and mobile apps also include advanced technical settings, such as adjustable encryption, custom DNS options, and split tunneling.

GUI App for Linux

Linux users will enjoy a full graphical user interface (GUI) in the PIA app, along with detailed OpenVPN and WireGuard configuration files and scripts. Tech-savvy users often appreciate the level of control it provides, including flexible split-tunneling options, something not commonly available in basic command-line tools.

Decent Upload Speeds

PIA delivers good upload speeds on both Indian servers (129 Mbps) and US servers (134 Mbps). This allows users to enjoy faster file transfers, smooth video calls, and efficient cloud backups.

Large Server Network

With over servers across 91 countries (Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East/Africa), PIA offers a wide range of connection options. It also provides virtual VPN servers for Indian users, potentially improving geo-restricted content access.

Cons of Private Internet Access

Speed Fluctuations

Although PIA shows good upload speeds, its download performance is not as impressive. I experienced over a 50% drop in download speeds on both Indian and US servers. Plus, the speeds were inconsistent during testing.

Kape Technologies Ownership

Similar to CyberGhost and ExpressVPN, PIA is now owned by Kape Technologies. This raises concerns among some privacy advocates due to the shady corporate history. Before rebranding as Kape Technologies, it operated as Crossrider, which had been associated with distributing adware and browser-hijacking tools.

Limited Streaming Support

PIA currently doesn’t unblock popular Indian streaming platforms like SonyLiv, Zee5, and JioCinema. Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video may work occasionally.

US Jurisdiction

PIA is headquartered in the United States, which is part of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance. In certain legal situations, this VPN provider may be required to comply with federal data requests.

PIA can be even more affordable than Surfshark, one of the most budget-friendly premium VPNs. However, you need to subscribe to the 3-year plan by paying ₹5,853 ($63) upfront to get it at just ₹146.33 ($1.59) per month. Along with this plan, users will enjoy 30 days money-back guarantee and 4 extra months of access.

Conclusion

Private Internet Access (PIA) offers a solid set of features for security-conscious users. Its snooze functionality, P2P support with port forwarding, and built-in malware and ad blocking add value. However, its US-based jurisdiction and Kape Technologies ownership may raise concerns for some users.

The 40-month subscription costs ₹5,853, making it an affordable option. However, I don’t find it compelling enough to recommend due to speed fluctuations and inconsistent streaming performance.

Overall, PIA is worth considering only if you specifically need features like P2P with port forwarding, split tunneling on macOS, or a GUI app for Linux.

8) CyberGhost

Kripesh’s Rating – 3.4/5

If you search for the best VPNs in 2026, you’ll definitely find CyberGhost among the top-ranking options. However, in my experience, it hasn’t been that impressive. CyberGhost is a Romania-based VPN launched in 2011. It offers over a large server network across 100 countries. In 2017, the VPN was also acquired by Kape Technologies.

CyberGhost VPN logo

Pros of CyberGhost

Romania-Based Jurisdiction

CyberGhost’s headquarters are in Bucharest, Romania. Romania is outside of the 14 Eyes intelligence-sharing alliances. This means CyberGhost is not legally obligated to share user data with these countries under specific circumstances.

Large Server Networks

CyberGhost has one of the widest server networks among the VPN providers mentioned in this article. It offers over 11,000 servers across 100+ countries. In India, it provides a virtual server located in Mumbai.

Audited No-Log VPN

CyberGhost claims to be a no-logs VPN, meaning it does not store any sensitive user data. Its no-logs policy has been audited twice: once in 2022 and again in 2024, by Deloitte. Both audits confirmed the legitimacy of its no-logs claims.

Easy-to-Use Interface

Its user interface features a simple dashboard with a large connect/reconnect button for smooth navigation. Servers are neatly organized for streaming and torrenting. Other necessary tools, like the kill switch and split tunneling, are clearly arranged within the settings.

Longest Refund Policy

Most premium VPNs offer a refund window of 14 to 30 days. However, CyberGhost provides a 45-day money-back guarantee. This allows you to use the service for nearly 1.5 months and still get a full refund if you’re not satisfied.

Average Speed

CyberGhost offers faster speeds than PrivateVPN. The download and upload speeds for Indian servers were around 190 Mbps and 83 Mbps, respectively. However, these speeds are unreliable and fluctuate frequently (during peak sessions).

Free Cloud Storage

All CyberGhost plans include complimentary cloud storage. Specifically, you’ll receive 500GB of storage on pCloud for a period of one year.

Cons of CyberGhost

Below-Average Speed

With my 200 Mbps connection, I achieved only 95 Mbps download speed (a 52% drop) and 124 Mbps upload speed (a 38% drop). In fact, speeds dropped by up to 80% when connected to US and other international servers. Such a significant reduction can negatively impact streaming and general browsing activities.

IP Address Collection

During my review of CyberGhost’s privacy policy, I discovered they collect user IP addresses as a part of their fraud detection measures. Since they don’t clearly explain a collection or deletion policy like some competitors (e.g., Surfshark deletes IP addresses within 15 minutes), it can bother some users.

Ineffective Ad Blocker

CyberGhost includes an integrated ad blocker, called ‘Block Content.’ However, during my testing, this ad blocker did not function on my system.

Limited Streaming Support for Indian Platforms

Currently, CyberGhost doesn’t support popular Indian streaming services. So, you can’t enjoy Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, or JioCinema, even if connected to the Indian server.

Owned by Kape Technologies

CyberGhost is owned by Kape Technologies, which was previously known as Crossrider. Crossrider has faced accusations of developing malicious software in the past. This raises concerns about potential future practices.

CyberGhost’s monthly plan is expensive, costing around ₹965 ($10) per month. It comes with only a 14-day refund policy.

To save up to 83%, I recommend choosing the 2-year plan. It includes 4 extra months of access and a 45-day money-back guarantee. This brings the total to 28 months of subscription for ₹4,620 ($50).

Conclusion

CyberGhost offers one of the largest server networks globally. It includes the WireGuard protocol, a kill switch, split tunneling, 10 Gbps servers, and P2P support. However, its speed is unreliable, dropping by 80% in some locations.

Indian users may struggle to access popular OTT platforms. International streaming can work if speeds are sufficient. CyberGhost’s privacy policy does not clearly explain why it collects user IP addresses.

In my view, CyberGhost is not worth the investment. It may only be a good option if you need access to a specific server location that other VPNs do not offer.

9) FastVPN by Namecheap

Kripesh’s Rating – 3.6/5

FastVPN is a white-label VPN offered by Namecheap. Namecheap is already well-known as a leading domain registrar in India. Since FastVPN is a white-label service, it does not maintain its own servers; instead, it resells IPVanish’s network under its own brand.

fastvpn

Pros of FastVPN

Affordable Pricing

FastVPN costs just $1 for the first month, and $12 for a 1-year subscription. So, it is one of the most cost-effective options among the VPNs reviewed.

Intuitive User Interface

Since last year, FastVPN has improved its user interface significantly. The app is now easy to use, displaying all network connection details on the main screen, with clearly organized settings.

Decent Speed

During testing on an Indian server, I achieved 140 Mbps download and 82 Mbps upload speeds, better than last year. This represents an overall speed reduction of around 30%, which is average considering VPN-induced latency.

Unlimited Device Access

Unlike NordVPN or ExpressVPN, FastVPN offers unlimited device connections. So you can connect as many devices as you want at the same time.

Cons of FastVPN

US Jurisdiction

FastVPN, operated by Namecheap, falls under United States jurisdiction. This raises concerns about potential data sharing due to the country’s involvement in the Five Eyes intelligence alliance.

Poor Privacy Policy

The privacy policy of FastVPN appears vague to me. On closer inspection, I found they mention the use of user-specific IDs, which may be created and shared by upstream third-party providers as necessary. But details about these user IDs are very limited.

No Audit

Unlike security-focused VPN providers, FastVPN has not undergone any third-party security audits as of 2026. While it claims limited data collection and no tracking of browsing activity, there is no independent verification to support these claims.

Poor Streaming Performance

FastVPN’s streaming performance is disappointing. It struggles to unblock Amazon Prime Video, Zee5, and Hotstar. I was able to unlock Netflix, but slow speeds affected the streaming experience.

No Unlimited Data

Although FastVPN claims to offer unlimited bandwidth, there appears to be a data cap in practice. According to Reddit user reviews, FastVPN may restrict usage after approximately 1 TB of data usage per month.

Weak Customer Support

FastVPN advertises 24/7 live chat and a helpful knowledge base, but the actual support experience is limited. Since it relies on third-party server infrastructure, the level of support may not be as strong or responsive.

Basic Features

You’ll find basic VPN features with FastVPN, like a kill switch and 256-bit AES encryption. But it’s missing advanced protection features like an ad blocker, WireGuard protocol, antivirus, and RAM servers.

Below Average Speed

FastVPN’s speed performance was unsatisfactory during my tests. On Indian servers, I observed a download speed of 41 Mbps (82.92% drop) and an upload speed of 54 Mbps (77.50% drop). The VPN-induced latency on USA servers was even more pronounced, resulting in download speeds of only 38 Mbps (84.17% drop) and upload speeds of 17 Mbps (92.92% drop).

No WireGuard Support

WireGuard, the lightweight VPN protocol, is known for superior speed and security. Unlike many premium VPNs, which include WireGuard, FastVPN provides only OpenVPN, IKEv2, and a Scramble (obfuscated server) option.

Conclusion

FastVPN by Namecheap offers over 2,700 servers across 100+ global locations. Users get essential VPN features, including a kill switch, split tunneling, obfuscated servers, and strong encryption.

However, it lacks P2P file sharing support and other advanced VPN features. Its streaming performance and customer support are also poor, and there are concerns regarding its privacy practices.

Overall, FastVPN is an affordable option for basic tasks like limited website unblocking or securing public Wi-Fi connections. I’ll not recommend this VPN for privacy-conscious users. That said, it can still be a better option than free VPNs for safer browsing.

Tips for Choosing the Best VPN

With over 100 VPNs on the market, choosing the right one can be overwhelming. Let’s explore some reliable methods I’ve used to pick the best VPN for my needs!

1) Identify Your Requirements

Before diving into VPN options, understand your priorities. Are you seeking a VPN for reliable streaming, smooth online gaming, or increased privacy? Knowing your needs narrows your search and saves time.

2) Do Your Research

Research is key to selecting a trustworthy VPN. It helps identify potential issues and find reputable providers. Here’s how to approach it: Read expert reviews and visit official websites for features, pricing, and privacy policies.

Don’t be fooled by rankings! Some websites might be biased towards certain VPNs due to affiliations with parent companies. For example, Kape Technologies owns ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access, etc. Look for a variety of review sources to avoid shady recommendations.

3) Get a Trial

If your chosen VPN offers a free plan, it’s a great way to test its functionality before committing. Many VPNs also have free trial periods. Take advantage of these to ensure the service meets your needs. If unsatisfied, most providers offer full refunds during the trial period.

4) Know Your Country’s Policies

VPN regulations vary by country. Before using a VPN, research your country’s specific policies. For instance, China restricts VPN use, while India mandates data retention for VPN providers with physical servers within the country.

Unfamiliar with Indian VPN data laws? We’ve explained everything about the VPN ban in India in our guide.

List of VPNs to Avoid in 2026

1) IVPN

IVPN is a privacy-focused VPN with strong features like Anti-Tracker Mode. However, it has no servers in India, making it a non-viable option for Indian users.

2) IP Vanish

If you prioritize a balanced VPN offering speed, security, and unlimited device connections, IPVanish was previously a good choice. Unfortunately, they have also removed their servers from India.

3) PureVPN

PureVPN provides a large network of 6,000+ servers and promises a secure internet experience. However, it falls short of my recommendations due to poor performance in terms of speed and streaming capabilities.

4) VyprVPN

VyprVPN is often recommended for its strong data encryption and stable connection speeds. However, their customer service remains unclear about whether they operate virtual or physical servers in India. Due to this lack of transparency, I’ve excluded it from the list.

5) Windscribe

Windscribe ranks among my top 3 free VPNs for 2026. It offers unlimited connections for free users and doesn’t require email verification for signup. However, compared to its free features, the paid version may not be justified for all users.

6) TunnelBear

TunnelBear offers a user-friendly interface, business VPN plans, and unlimited data access. However, similar to other providers on this list, they have removed their Indian servers due to concerns about mandatory data retention laws.

Testing Parameters

To recommend the most reliable VPNs, first, I created accounts and evaluated free versions of various VPNs. This initial screening identified the 9 most promising contenders. To truly assess their potential, I invested in paid plans and put these VPNs under the following parameters:

  • VPN Speed from Speedtest.net (Baseline speed: 240 Mbps)
  • DNS leak protection tests from IPleak.net
  • Checking audits & privacy policy
  • Customer support
  • Ease of use
  • Features
  • Streaming performance
  • P2P support

Only those with top-tier security features like robust 256-bit AES encryption, secure RAM-based servers, advanced protocols, a kill switch, and split tunneling qualified for further exploration. Finally, through this comprehensive testing process, I was able to identify the top 8 VPNs that stood out from the crowd.

Why Should You Trust Me?

Since 2015, I’ve gained extensive knowledge and hands-on experience in the digital domain. I’ve reviewed over 30 VPNs in the last four years. You can find tried-and-tested reviews on Surfshark, NordVPN, and ExpressVPN, along with many informative guides on VPN, VPN-induced latency, and free VPNs for 2026 on my blog.

My goal is to provide you with the full picture, both good and bad, about different VPN services so you can choose the best one for your needs, without any bias towards specific brands.

Additionally, as I use these VPNs daily, I’m confident in my knowledge of what’s new, what works best, and how to keep your information secure. With my experience, I can recommend VPNs that perfectly fit your exact needs.

Conclusion

In this article, I’ve reviewed the top 9 VPNs of 2026. The reviews include the pros and cons of each VPN, its features, and its pricing plans. Based on overall security, browsing experience, features offered, and the best value proposition, NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN rank in the top three spots.

If you prioritize an all-in-one VPN with features like ad blocking, dark web monitoring, and more, NordVPN should be your first choice. However, for the budget-conscious user, Surfshark offers similar functionality at a lower cost, even unique features like Camouflage mode and NoBorders mode. Finally, if security is your top concern, ExpressVPN steps forward with its password protection.

Overall, all nine of the mentioned VPNs are reputable options. I’ve clearly explained their strengths and weaknesses with no bias. Now, tell me: which VPN did you find most useful? You can also ask questions you have regarding VPN policies, security features, and more. Let’s keep the conversation going!
