After researching, testing, and using dozens of art generators for weeks, I finalized the following 12 Best Free AI Art Generators for you! These tools can also be considered as the best Midjourney Alternatives. Let’s look at what they offer!

1. Microsoft Copilot Designer

Microsoft Copilot Designer (formerly Bing Image Creator) is an AI art generation platform offered by Microsoft in March 2023. It works on an advanced version of Dall-E technology that helps it generate high-quality images from text prompts.

With the recent Dall-E 3 update, this tool has seen a massive improvement in its image quality. It can even generate logos through text prompts.

To get started, you can visit the Microsoft Copilot Designer and sign in with your Microsoft account. Then, you can enter any prompt of your choice and it’ll generate multiple images in a grid format. It lets you share, save, and download them as well.

The above image depicts logos generated for a food delivery service called ‘Zestify’. I really liked how it’s able to follow most of the image instructions provided in the text prompt.

The best thing about this tool is its high-quality and refined images. You get 15 boosts/day with the free plan. You can still generate images at a slower speed once these credits expire. However, with the recent Dall.E 3 update, the image generation is usually slow for all images.

Overall, I was quite impressed with the quality of art produced by Copilot Designer. I found it to be better than Dall-E for its image quality.

2. Leonardo AI

Leonardo AI is a groundbreaking AI image generator that runs on multiple fine-tuned image generation models. It helps you create stunning designs and visuals within seconds. With a modern and highly responsive UI, Leonardo enhances the entire design experience for its users. 

Once you sign up for its free plan, you can select from 10 powerful AI image models, specify contrast, and image dimension, and add a negative prompt to exclude specific elements. It features multiple preset styles like 3D render, cinematic, dynamic, sketch, etc to choose from.

It also has a Prompt Enhance feature that improves shorter prompts to automatically insert more detail. This is helpful for beginners with no experience in writing image prompts.

Overall, I was extremely impressed with the refined quality of AI images generated by Leonardo AI. However, the option to set quality and number of outputs is not available for free. If you need professional images for your projects, Leonardo AI would serve as the ideal Midjourney Alternative.

The free plan offers a daily limit of 150 fast tokens. Each image consumes 6 tokens and 4 images are generated by default with each query. Thus, every query consumes 24 tokens. You can still generate images at a slower pace when the daily tokens are used up.

It features multiple image styles like illustration, photorealism, HDR, motion blur, natural light, black and white, etc. You also get a style diversity feature with Recraft. Keeping it on generates different styles of the same image. Whereas, turning it off generates similar images in high quality.

I loved the quality of the image generated and the prompt adherence. However, I couldn’t find any way to check the used-up and leftover image credits on my account.  

Apart from image generation, Recraft also offers additional tools like background remover, color control, image vectorizer, etc. I loved that even the free plan of Recraft lets you use your generated images for commercial purposes without incurring any additional fee. 

The free plan of Recraft offers 10000 AI requests/month. This includes image generation, inpainting, vectorization, background removal, and upscaling. You can upgrade to its paid plan for unlimited AI requests and faster image generation for $20/month. 

4. SeaArt AI

SeaArt AI is a versatile platform that offers a range of AI image generation and editing tools. The image generation dashboard is designed like a chat, making it more convenient and easy to use. 

You simply need to enter your prompt and choose an image model. It features dozens of powerful models for creating different types of images. You can customize settings like image quantity, and size, and upload images for reference. Its Prompt Magic tool polishes your AI mages when enabled. 

I found the image quality pretty refined. The prompt I used produced adorable 3D images of a camel in pyjamas! Besides AI image generator, it also features a range of other tools like AI Face Swap, AI Filters, AI Eraser, Background Remover, AI Makeup, etc. 

The free plan offers 150 image credits/day. Each image generation costs 6 credits, meaning you can generate 25 free images every day.

I absolutely loved the images generated by this tool. They were super rich, high quality, and followed the prompt exceptionally well!

Besides this, Freepik also features an AI Sketch to Image Generator where you can specify your prompt and then draw a basic doodle of what you want. It allows you to vary the imagination percentage on a slider bar. Though the results are not very pleasing, it still does a pretty good job. 

On the free plan of Freepik, you get 20 image generation credits every day. For unlimited AI image generation, you can upgrade to its premium plan for $7.20/month (annually).

6. Flux.1

Flux.1 is an open-source AI image generation model developed by Black Forest Labs. It features 10 powerful image models like DreamShaper XL, PixelArt XL, FLUX, NightVision XL, and more.

I loved the prompt adherence of Flux.1. The images generated by it were of high quality and super relevant. In my experience, its best use case is for logos and generating images with written text. Unlike other image generators, you’ll find precise text generated how you want!

7. BlueWillow by LimeWire

It generates 4 images by default. For every image, you can generate similar images or download/edit them. Overall, I really loved the image quality and intricate details in the outputs. Its free plan offers 25 free image credits per month.

Ideogram is a popular text-to-image generation tool. To get started with it, you can type in your prompt and select an image style from its presets like 3D render, typography, illustration, cinematic, conceptual art, etc. 

Next, you can choose an aspect ratio and enable Magic Prompt to improve image variety. It generates 4 images by default. You cannot specify the number of images to generate, though. 

Overall, the images generated by Ideogram are really good. I liked how it follows the prompt precisely. The free plan offers 10 prompts/day. For more, you can upgrade to Ideogram Plus for $16/month and get 1000 priority prompts + unlimited slow prompts. 

10. Dream By WOMBO

Dream by Wombo is another popular tool for generating AI art and images. It uses two AI neural networks called CLIP and VQGAN. VQGAN generates AI images that resemble other images it’s trained on. And CLIP identifies how suitable a text input is to an image.

Together, these two AI technologies help to generate instant images and photos based on your text prompts.

In order to use Dream, you can sign up for a free account and enter your prompts in the search bar or upload a reference image. Then, you select from dozens of art styles and generate unique images. It generates images in the 9:16 ratio, i.e., the dimensions of a mobile image.

What I really liked about Dream is that it offers unlimited image generation. However, there are some restrictions like you cannot access premium art styles and can only generate 1 image at a time. I found its output quality to be quite good.

Their premium plans are quite affordable at $9.99/month. AI Image Generators rarely provide lifetime deals, but you can find one on Dream! It offers its services on a lifetime deal for $169.99, which is awesome!

11. Stable Diffusion Online

Stable Diffusion Web is a popular image generation platform that works on the Stable Diffusion model. You don’t need to create an account in order to use this tool. Images can be generated quickly by entering your prompt on their website. 

To start with it, you can enter your prompt, choose a style, aspect ratio, negative prompt, and number of images (1 or 2). The quality of image generated primarily depends on your prompt. The more detailed prompt you supply, the better the outputs will get! 

I personally found the outputs to be absolutely stunning. They completely adhere to the input prompt and generate heavily detailed images. You can also check out the Stable Diffusion Prompts Database for some interesting and creative ideas for your descriptions. 

Its free plan offers 10 credits per day, where 1 credit is consumed per image generated, and not per query run.

12. NightCafe

NightCafe is an AI image creator founded by Angus Russell in 2019. It uses the Neural Style Transfer method to reimagine any AI image in different styles. Along with that, it also uses VQGAN+CLIP models for generating more precise and accurate images.

In order to access NightCafe, you can simply visit their website and supply your text prompts. It lets you choose from 40+ preset styles along with an appropriate AI model. It features 60+ AI models along with a massive library of community models.

You can also specify the number of images to generate (1, 4, 9, or 16) along with aspect ratio, and runtime. Interestingly, you can generate 1 image at a time for free. But if you wish to generate more than one image, credits are consumed.

It offers 5 free image credits per day. But the credit consumption depends on the AI model you select. Overall, I found the output images to be pretty impressive and detailed.

13. Deep Dream Generator

Deep Dream Generator is software for creating stunning AI art. To start, you simply need to write your prompts and choose an AI model from its library. It offers 5 image models for free. You can also specify image quality, and aspect ratio, and add negative prompts and modifiers.

The generated images can be edited, upscaled, evolved, or animated. In my opinion, the quality of the images generated was pretty good! However, some elements along with their positions and sizes were inconsistent. The outputs are sometimes not consistent with the supplied prompts. 

Besides image generation, it also has an AI image upscaler, AI editor, and AI video generator. You get 100 energy points (image credits) on Deep Dream Generator, out of which 80 are one-time and 20 are rechargeable. Overall, the free plan looks quite limited. 

If you need to generate simple images for general purposes and projects, this is a decent tool to try out!

14. Playground.com

Playground is another renowned AI image-generation tool. The process of creating catchy images with it is simple! Enter your prompt, select an aspect ratio, speed, quality, number of images, and AI model. Your image is produced within seconds! 

I found the quality of the images generated to be pretty decent. You can try experimenting with different image models to receive more focused results. Its free plan offers 50 images/day that you can use for commercial purposes. 

15. Craiyon

Craiyon is an AI model developed by Boris Dayma in 2022. It helps you generate unique AI images based on your text inputs. Previously known as Dall-E Mini, Craiyon is trained on the Google PU Research Cloud.

Crayon offers unlimited image generation with no limits! You don’t even need to sign up for an account in order to use it.  All you need to do is enter your text prompt and choose if you wish to generate Art, Drawing, or Photo. It’ll generate a 3×3 grid of images for you. 

An interesting thing about Craiyon is that it also lets you specify negative words. These are elements that you don’t want the AI to include in your image. 

However, I found the output quality to be pretty average and the generated images were not accurate either. It may work for some use cases, but I didn’t like it much. You can surely try it, considering it comes with unlimited images.

16. Canva Text to Image

Canva is a popular online graphic designing platform that helps you design a range of assets, including social media posts, videos, banners, logos, and more. They’ve recently introduced many AI features, including their AI image generator, which works on the Stable Diffusion model. 

For getting started with Canva, you need to sign up for a free account. Next, you can go to the Magic Media tool and enter your image prompt. It lets you choose an aspect ratio and image style under photography, digital art, and fine art categories. There are no additional customizations available.

By default, it generates 4 images. personally found the images generated by Canva to be okayish. They’re not always relevant to the text prompts and lack details at times. Free users of Canva get 50 AI credits per month, where 1 query (4 images) counts as 1 credit.

As it processes your prompt, it highlights a few keywords and offers multiple options if you wish to modify anything. In a few seconds, 4 high-quality images are generated. You can edit them or download them. 

Though it doesn’t offer many options like deciding the number of outputs, image model, art style, etc, the outputs produced by Imagen 3 are top-notch! Currently, it is only available in the US and can be accessed via ImageFX and Vertex AI platforms.

The Internet is overflowing with AI-generated art. All these AI art generators look promising, but which one should you pick? Well, here are some factors that you may consider before selecting an AI art generator.
