NymVPN Review 2026: Is This Mixnet VPN Worth It (Tested From Beta to Launch)

Can a VPN make your internet activity almost impossible to trace? even against advanced surveillance?

NymVPN claims to do exactly that with its decentralized mixnet architecture. It’s a relatively new VPN service that aims to obscure not just your identity, but also your metadata and traffic patterns, unlike traditional VPNs.

But does it actually deliver? Can its experimental technology compete with established providers like NordVPN or Surfshark?

I’ve tested this VPN from its beta phase through to its full launch. In this NymVPN review, I’ll break down its speed, performance, security architecture, pros and cons, and overall value.

Let’s begin!

About NymVPN

NymVPN is a relatively new secure VPN provider that launched in March 2025. Nym Technologies, a Switzerland-based organization, operates the service. The Nym team includes talented research assistants, cybersecurity experts, and cryptology specialists who are committed to building a decentralized, open-source mixnet network for stronger privacy.

NymVPN review

The technical architecture of this privacy-focused VPN differs from traditional services like NordVPN or Surfshark. Instead of relying only on a no-logs policy, NymVPN runs on a zero-knowledge network. It routes traffic through independent nodes to protect metadata, similar to how the Tor Browser works.

In just a few months since launch, the app has gained 50K+ downloads with a 3.9-star rating on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. The team is continuously updating the software to introduce new features like zk-nyms on mainnet, split tunneling, kill switches across all devices, and ongoing improvements to the Nym network.

NymVPN Speeds

Normally, I run VPN speed tests on Speedtest.net by Ookla. I usually connect the VPN to India and US servers and run the test to measure the percentage drop and average speed. My baseline speed is 200 Mbps with a 7 ms ping rate. But every time I connected to NymVPN, the speed test failed and showed an error.

So, I measured the performance based on download and upload results instead. In Fast Mode, I got decent download speeds. It played 4K videos on YouTube, movies on OTT channels without buffering. But when I uploaded files to Drive, it took longer than usual.

NymVPN Speed

In NymVPN’s Anonymous Mode, it routes traffic through extra layers for stronger privacy. This makes it harder to track your traffic, but obviously slows down the connection.

Because of this, I found that Anonymous Mode is too slow for streaming. It works well for secure browsing or other low-bandwidth online activities.

NymVPN Servers

Servers Locations

Unlike most VPNs, NymVPN doesn’t send your data through a single VPN server location. That’s why you can’t select just one fixed server location.

Instead, NymVPN uses mixnet technology, which routes your data through multiple decentralized nodes. Here, you choose two connection points called Entry and Exit servers.

NymVPN Servers Locations

NymVPN operates 600+ independent nodes across 70+ countries. Because the network is decentralized, you won’t always see a fixed list of locations.

When I connected, I saw nodes in many major locations such as the United States, Canada, Switzerland, Sweden, Hong Kong, and Singapore. In fact, you’ll find Indian locations, which lets you easily unlock Indian OTT channels.

RAM Servers

Premium VPNs run their own servers in data centers around the world.  User data is stored on temporary computer memory (RAM) rather than on hard drives. This means all data disappears when the system is rebooted.

NymVPN doesn’t run on company-owned servers. The network is decentralized, so a single company does not control the data. Instead, traffic routes through multiple independent nodes (similar to volunteer computers). It’s like sending a letter through several strangers instead of one post office.

Because of this system, the idea of RAM-only servers doesn’t apply to NymVPN.

Obfuscated Servers

Nym obfuscates traffic patterns and metadata in two ways. First is Anonymous Mode, which provides a privacy and anti-censorship layer by design for restricted countries like China and Russia.

This mode uses 5-hop mixnet technology, which encrypts and splits your data into multiple packets. These packets pass through several nodes that mix your traffic with others and add minor delays. Because of this, the overall traffic pattern becomes much harder to analyze.

NymVPN Obfuscated Servers

The second feature is an anti-censorship feature. If anonymous mode doesn’t work, the app allows manual settings. Go to Settings → Anti-censorship → Toggle ON QUIC (on mobile or desktop).

QUIC is a modern Internet protocol developed by Google. It helps VPN traffic look more like normal web browsing in restrictive networks.

Dynamic or Static IP Address

Unfortunately, NymVPN does not offer dedicated or static IP addresses. Instead, it uses shared and rotating IPs among many users.

NymVPN Streaming Performances

Amazon Prime USYes✅

Honestly, NymVPN is not perfect for streaming. I got mixed results when testing different platforms. First, I connected to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video using servers in locations like the US, UK, and Canada. The VPN could unlock these platforms, and videos played with little lag.

NymVPN Streaming- Amazon Prime

But when I tried Indian OTT platforms by selecting India for both entry and exit nodes, it didn’t work at first. NymVPN suggests setting the exit node to the country where you want to access the content.

So next, I selected Switzerland as the entry node and India as the exit node. This time, I could watch sports and movies on SonyLiv. Though Hotstar and ZEE5 only worked through the mobile app, not in browsers. I also noticed that streaming performance was better on mobile than on desktop.

Streaming performance on mobile app

In terms of streaming performance, NymVPN is far behind NordVPN or Surfshark. In fact, its performance is not on par with free VPNs like Proton VPN or EventVPN.

P2P/Torrenting

P2P Torrenting

I tested NymVPN’s torrenting capability by downloading test torrents on both the US and India locations. The downloads worked, but the speeds were not on par with popular VPNs like Surfshark or ExpressVPN.

NymVPN Privacy

Privacy Policy

NymVPN operates on a decentralized, zero-knowledge network. In this system, user traffic is routed through independently operated nodes that are not under the direct control of Nym. Operators must sign a legal agreement with Nym to join the network. So, neither Nym nor the node operators are allowed to store user data.

NymVPN privacy statement

Even if an operator tried to log data, they would only see small, fragmented pieces of traffic. This is because Nym splits and routes data through multiple nodes. So, it is difficult to trace a complete user’s activity.

Another good thing is that Nym is also transparent about third-party data sharing, user data protection rights, legal jurisdiction, and data storage policies. They maintain an updated privacy statement on their official website. Hence, users can review everything themselves if they have any concerns.

No-log Policy

According to its official policy, NymVPN does not store browsing history, IP addresses, destinations, or traffic content. Its payment system also uses zero-knowledge credentials (zk-nyms) to keep payments anonymous.

The app may collect limited data such as usage stats, connection timestamps, data volume, crash reports, and basic account details like the 24-word recovery phrase. But this data is collected only with the user’s permission.

NymVPN's data logging settings

If you open the NymVPN app settings, you’ll find these options under the “Legal” and “Data & Privacy” sections. You can enable or disable these options anytime, and they are disabled by default.

I didn’t enable logging permissions in the mobile app, but I still found some logs stored in the desktop app. I deleted them completely rather than exporting them locally.

Security Audits

NymVPN claims that it regularly reviews its security infrastructure. However, since 2021, it has undergone only four public security audits, while two more technical reviews (2023–2024) are still unpublished. Some audit findings also raised concerns.

  • Cure53 Audit (July 2024): The Berlin-based cybersecurity firm Cure53 independently audited the NymVPN apps, VPN infrastructure, and cryptographic implementations. They found 7 high and critical security vulnerabilities.
  • Oak Security Audit (January 2023): Oak Security, a Germany-based firm specializing in blockchain and decentralized protocols, reviewed the Nym mixnet, vesting contracts, and the Nym Wallet. The audit found 9 major and critical security vulnerabilities.

Headquarters

Nym Technologies is based in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Like Proton VPN, it follows Switzerland’s New Federal Act on Data Protection (NFADP), one of the strongest privacy laws in the world.

Switzerland is also outside the 14-Eyes intelligence alliance, which means companies there are not required to share user data with foreign governments.

Privacy Comparison

Similar to other premium VPNs, NymVPN maintains a transparent privacy policy. Compared to services like NordVPN or Surfshark, its decentralized design offers stronger protection against data logging. It has also undergone several independent security reviews.

Another positive thing is its Swiss-based jurisdiction. But some audits have reported critical security vulnerabilities, so Nym still needs improvements in its technical infrastructure. The company says it is working on upgrades such as post-quantum cryptography, 2FA, and other security features in the future.

You’ll find three VPN protocols in traditional VPNs: OpenVPN, WireGuard, and IKEv2/IPsec. But in NymVPN, the protocols are more like onion routing.  There are two security modes: Fast Mode and Anonymous Mode.

Fast Mode runs on a 2-hop decentralized network. It uses AmneziaWG, a censorship-resistant modified version of the WireGuard protocol. Fast Mode is the default mode and works well for normal online activities such as browsing, social media, streaming, downloading files, and torrenting.

Security Protocols

Anonymous Mode, on the other hand, uses a 5-hop Noise-Generating Mixnet (NGM). In this mode, data packets are encrypted in multiple layers, mixed with other traffic, and combined with noise(covert traffic) to hide patterns for maximum anonymity.

Because of this, this mode is better suited for high-privacy activities. You can do secure messaging, cryptocurrency transactions, or other sensitive tasks, but you can’t stream or record 4K videos due to slow speeds.

DNS Leak Test

I performed a DNS leak test for NymVPN on Ipleak.net. The results showed 16 DNS servers, all located in Canada, instead of my actual location in India.

DNS Leak Test

No WebRTC, HTTPS, or transparent proxy leaks were detected. This means NymVPN worked properly and provided solid leak protection.

Kill Switch

NymVPN offers a system-wide kill switch on all its apps. But it is enabled by default on the Mac, Windows, and Android apps.

This always-on kill switch keeps my connection secure at all times. But I can not turn it off if needed. When the VPN connection drops, a kill switch immediately blocks your internet access to prevent any data leaks.

Kill Switch

In reality, NymVPN’s kill switch worked as expected. It blocked my internet connection right away when I tried to disconnect the VPN.

Split Tunneling

NymVPN currently offers split tunneling only on Android devices. It works on an app-based system, meaning you can choose which apps should use NymVPN and which ones should connect to the internet directly.

NymVPN Split Tunneling

The setup is simple in the app: a green icon shows the app is connected through NymVPN, while a red icon means it connects directly. Nym is also working on bringing split tunneling to other platforms in the future.

Pricing

Per-month cost$7.99/ Month$2.89/ Month$2.39/ Month
Total cost$7.99$34.68$57.36

Nym’s monthly plan costs you $7.99, but if you choose the 2-year plan, you can save more. Nym currently offers about 87% off, bringing the total price to $57.36, instead of $191.20. So, you have to pay $2.39/month for 24 months.

With all plans, you can connect up to 10 devices, access 60+ entry and exit locations worldwide, get 2 TB monthly data per account, use unlinkable payments, and all other features.

Refund Policy

NymVPN offers a 7-day free trial with its 2-year plan, allowing you to test the service before committing. If you’re not satisfied, you can cancel the subscription during this period.

Apart from that, NymVPN doesn’t provide a full refund policy. Instead, it offers a pro-rata refund for unused days. For example, if you cancel your subscription within 30 days and still have 20 days remaining, you’ll receive a refund only for those unused 20 days.

Payment Options

To purchase a NymVPN plan, you can use standard payment gateways. These allow payments through credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard), Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Unlike many other VPNs, Nym also offers a Pay by Mail option, where you can send cash. Payments are accepted in Swiss francs, euros, British pounds, or US dollars.

Nym also supports payments using NYM tokens or cryptocurrencies such as Monero, Zcash, and Bitcoin. The key advantage is that Nym uses zk-nyms (zero-knowledge credentials).

This means you don’t need to reveal sensitive information like your name, card details, or crypto wallet to Nym. Instead, the system converts your payment into an anonymous credential that simply proves you paid for access.

Competitor Pricing

Unlike Surfshark or NordVPN, NymVPN doesn’t offer different categories of VPN plans. The service remains the same, and the price only varies depending on the subscription duration.

Compared to NordVPN or Proton VPN, Nym’s monthly plan is relatively cheaper. But considering the features it offers, the annual and long-term plans feel somewhat expensive to me.

Unfortunately, human agents are not available 24/7 for live chat. Nym is also active on platforms like Telegram, Discord, and Twitter, but direct support is mainly handled through the support page or email [email protected].

Additional Features

1. Ad Blockers

Previously, NymVPN did not include an ad blocker in its apps. However, on March 3, 2026, Nym released NymVPN v2026.4, which introduced an ad-blocking feature.

For now, the ad blocker is available only on the desktop app. During my testing, it blocked ads and trackers on news websites well.

NymVPN ad blocker

However, NymVPN’s ad blocker currently focuses only on ads and trackers. It is not a full malware or threat blocker like the features offered by Surfshark or NordVPN.

2. Multi-hop VPN

NymVPN is multi-hop by default. In Fast Mode, your traffic is routed through two servers. In Anonymous Mode, it passes through a 5-hop mixnet, which provides stronger privacy and makes tracking your activity much harder.

3. Tor over VPN

NymVPN’s working protocol is somewhat similar to the Tor Browser. But we cannot say that NymVPN and Tor are the same product.

Like Tor, the network is decentralized, and routes traffic through 3+ independent nodes. Entry nodes can see your IP address but not your destination, while exit nodes can see the destination but not your IP.

The core idea behind Tor Browser is onion routing, which uses fixed circuits and layered encryption. In contrast, NymVPN is based on a mixnet, which includes traffic mixing and cover traffic to make analysis more difficult.

In simple terms, Tor helps hide your IP address, whereas NymVPN not only hides your IP but also traffic patterns and metadata, more like a privacy-focused VPN.

Android & iOS (Mobile)Clean designEasy to use and generally smoother than the desktop apps
Browser ExtensionNot available

NymVPN offers a clean and consistent interface on both desktop and mobile devices. Its layout is simple and intuitive. The mobile app includes a few additional settings, such as Auto-connect, Passphrase, App Shortcuts, and Notifications, that aren’t available on desktop.

Installing the mobile app is straightforward. I can download it directly from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. But I couldn’t find the app on the macOS App Store, so I had to download the installer from NymVPN’s website.

NymVPN macOS user interface

Once you purchase a subscription, NymVPN generates a 24-word master key, which acts as highly secure login credentials. This access code, or passphrase, can be stored securely on your devices. Using it, I can log in with no need for an email address or traditional password.

Fast Mode and Anonymous Mode are very easy to establish with a single tap. In my testing, the connection typically took 4–5 seconds to establish, slower than providers like NordVPN or Surfshark (usually connect within 1–2 seconds). Anonymous Mode generally takes slightly longer to connect than Fast Mode.

NymVPN Android user interface

But this delay is expected since NymVPN relies on multi-hop routing. The interface makes it easy to view the countries available for entry and exit nodes. Notably, features like Auto-location or Fastest server selection are currently missing.

Performance-wise, the Android app ran smoothly, while the macOS version occasionally felt slow or slightly glitchy.

Performance & Reliability

I’ve used NymVPN over the past few months and have had a mixed experience with it. NymVPN is relatively new to the market and combines technologies used in both traditional VPNs and the Tor network.

Instead of following a standard no-logs policy, NymVPN operates on a zero-knowledge network model. Its mixnet architecture is designed with maximum user anonymity in mind, which helps bypass highly restrictive censorship.

In Anonymous Mode, traffic is routed through a 5-hop path, making it extremely difficult for anyone to trace or track your online activity. This makes the VPN particularly useful for journalists, activists, and people living under heavy internet censorship.

Like most VPN services, it also includes features such as a kill switch and split tunneling. However, because of its multiple layers of encryption and additional privacy mechanisms, NymVPN also has several drawbacks, which I’ll discuss in detail below.

NymVPN Pros

1. Mixnet architecture

NymVPN uses a mixnet architecture that splits internet traffic into packets and routes them through multiple nodes. Nym’s Noise-Generating Mixnet makes deanonymization through timing and traffic-volume analysis significantly more difficult.

2. Zero-knowledge network

This VPN operates on a zero-knowledge network model, meaning no single operator can view your complete identity or activity. Each node only sees partial and anonymized data, eliminating centralized logging points. Plus, NymVPN’s apps are open source, which improves transparency, encourages community oversight, and gives users greater control.

3. Anonymous Accounts & Payments

We don’t need to create an account with an email address or password. Instead, Nym allows login using a 24-word passphrase generated during subscription. The service also supports an anonymous payment method. You don’t even need to reveal credit card details or other sensitive personal information.

4. Based in Switzerland

NymVPN is headquartered in Switzerland, a country known for its strong privacy protections. Switzerland is also outside major intelligence-sharing alliances, which adds an extra layer of legal privacy protection for users.

5. Multi-Hop Connection

NymVPN provides built-in traffic obfuscation by default with two connection modes: Fast Mode and Anonymous Mode. Fast Mode works like a 2-hop decentralized VPN connection with double encryption, while Anonymous Mode routes traffic through a 5-hop mixnet path.

6. Simple Interface

The app has a clean and user-friendly interface. NymVPN’s home screen includes only the essential controls, while more advanced options are placed under the Settings menu. Features like the kill switch, split tunneling, and anti-censorship options are easy to locate and configure.

NymVPN Cons

1. Audit concerns

As mentioned earlier, security audits conducted by Cure53 and Oak Security highlighted severe to critical vulnerabilities in backend infrastructure and cryptographic implementation. Some technical review results still remain undisclosed publicly. These independent security organizations also recommended that Nym adopt more rigorous security practices to strengthen its infrastructure.

2. Slow Speeds

NymVPN takes longer to connect than most traditional VPN services. Anonymous Mode adds additional routing hops, which further slows down the connection. The latency can become quite high, and sometimes it may feel too slow for regular browsing or everyday tasks.

3. Inconsistent Streaming Support

During my testing, some streaming services worked on the mobile app but not through the browser. However, platforms like Amazon Prime Video and SonyLiv worked properly in the browser. Streaming support is not as reliable as with mainstream VPN providers due to its slow speeds as well.

4. Split Tunneling Missing

Split tunneling is currently available only on the Android app. The Windows and macOS versions do not support this feature yet, which means desktop users cannot choose specific apps or traffic to bypass the VPN connection.

5. Higher Price

Considering the features currently offered, NymVPN’s annual and bi-annual plans are relatively expensive. It does not provide the large number of server locations, unlimited connections, or specialized VPN features that many competing VPN services offer, even at higher-tier plans.

6. Data Cap

Most paid VPNs offer unlimited bandwidth across all plans. NymVPN, however, currently includes a 2TB monthly fair-use data limit. While this may be sufficient for typical browsing and streaming, it may not be enough for users who frequently stream 4K video, download large games, or perform large data backups.

NymVPN Alternatives

If you want more specialized features, these are my top 3 recommendations for premium VPNs:

1. Surfshark

The first VPN alternative I recommend is Surfshark. It’s one of the most budget-friendly VPN services while still offering all the essential features users expect. These include a kill switch to prevent data leaks, split tunneling across devices, strong encryption protocols, and a strict no-logs policy to protect user privacy.

Surfshark operates 4500+ servers across around 100 countries, which is a broader network than NymVPN. It also includes additional privacy tools such as Camouflage Mode, CleanWeb, NoBorders Mode, and Alternative ID.

One of Surfshark’s biggest advantages is its unlimited simultaneous device connections. With a single subscription, you can protect as many devices as you want, including phones, laptops, tablets, and smart TVs.

Another major benefit is its affordable pricing. The two-year Surfshark One plan, which bundles the VPN with antivirus protection, a private search engine, and identity monitoring, can cost as little as $1.68 per month.

2. NordVPN

If you’re ready to spend more for a little extra security, NordVPN is the best alternative to Surfshark. This VPN provider has built a strong reputation since its launch in 2012 for its fast performance and advanced security features. The company, headquartered in Panama, places it outside major international intelligence-sharing alliances, similar to NymVPN.

In terms of infrastructure, NordVPN operates a significantly larger network than many competitors, with 9,000+ VPN servers across over 110 countries. It follows a strict no-logs policy, which has been independently audited by Deloitte multiple times, including its most recent audit in 2026.

NordVPN also includes a wide range of security tools, such as split tunneling on Windows/Android/iOS, Meshnet, Threat Protection, Dark Web Monitor, and multi-factor authentication (MFA). Its two-year plan costs slightly more than NymVPN at around $2.82 per month.

However, it includes 4 extra months of access, support for up to 10 simultaneous device connections, the fastest servers, and a broader set of security features.

3. ExpressVPN

For users looking for a gaming-friendly VPN or reliable access to Chinese servers, ExpressVPN (launched in 2009) is a strong option to consider. The company is based in the British Virgin Islands, a jurisdiction known for its strong privacy protections and its position outside major intelligence-sharing alliances.

ExpressVPN is known for fast and stable connections, largely thanks to its proprietary Lightway protocol. The service operates 3,000+ servers in 105 countries, including two virtual servers for India. It also offers a range of security and privacy tools, such as a kill switch, split tunneling, an ad blocker, Threat Manager, ExpressVPN Keys password manager, ID Alerts, and parental controls.

ExpressVPN is slightly more expensive than NymVPN. Its two-year plan costs around $2.79 per month, but it also includes four additional months free when purchased through my link.

Why Should You Trust Me?

I’ve been working in the tech and tools space since 2015. With my hands-on experience testing and using 30+ VPNs over the past years, I reviewed many popular VPNs like Surfshark, NordVPN, ProtonVPN, and ExpressVPN. You’ll also find guides on VPN basics, Ways to reduce latency, best free VPNs, anti-detect browsers, etc, on my website.

My insights focus on real-world performance, ease of use, and reliability, not just technical specs. Plus, to stay updated on new features, updates, and performance changes, I maintain active subscriptions to multiple VPN services. This practical depth gave me confidence to test new VPN like NymVPN and provide honest feedback.

Conclusion

NymVPN is a powerful but niche security solution. Its decentralized, noise-generating mixnet architecture is still highly experimental. But one thing is clear: the VPN has been designed with maximum privacy and anti-surveillance protection in mind.

Compared with traditional VPN services, NymVPN offers stronger anonymity and greater resistance to traffic analysis. Instead of relying solely on a no-logs promise, its zero-knowledge network design ensures that no single operator can access or misuse user data. The VPN also includes essential features such as a kill switch, split tunneling on Android, anti-censorship tools, and multi-hop connections.

However, these privacy benefits come with significant trade-offs, and the service is still less mature than many mainstream VPNs. To achieve stronger anonymity, users often have to sacrifice connection speed and convenience. Streaming performance is inconsistent, and recent security audits revealed vulnerabilities, raising some concerns despite the company’s strong privacy claims.

In short, NymVPN is best suited for activists, journalists, and serious privacy enthusiasts. But you should be comfortable with its 2TB monthly data cap, occasional UX glitches, and limited feature set. It may not be the best choice for those who need fast connections, high-speed torrenting, lag-free gaming, or simple IP masking.

Before purchasing its subscription, I recommend trying NymVPN’s 7-day free trial to see if it fits your needs.

That’s all from my side—thanks for reading!
