CyberGhost Features Overview

About CyberGhost

CyberGhost is a popular VPN service founded in 2011 and based in Bucharest, Romania. It is often ranked among the top VPNs in many reviews, but the reality can be different.

Currently, it is owned by Kape Technologies, the same company that owns ExpressVPN. On the Google Play Store, CyberGhost VPN has surpassed 10 million downloads but holds a rating of 3.4 stars from over 166,000 users. The provider claims to serve over 38 million users globally as of 2026.

CyberGhost Speeds

In terms of speed, CyberGhost performed average in my testing with around a 50% speed drop. I checked its performance on both Indian and US servers using Speedtest.net. I use a 200 Mbps Airtel Wi-Fi connection, with a normal ping of around 7 ms.

Speed in India

After connecting to an Indian server, I got 95 Mbps download and 124 Mbps upload speed. That’s roughly a 52% drop in download speed and about a 38% drop in upload speed.

Speed in the US

On a distant US server, download speed dropped more, by around 89%, down to 22 Mbps. Upload speed was better at 127 Mbps, about a 36% loss.

All VPNs slow down your standard network speed because of the added layer of encryption. But with premium VPNs, this latency is negligible. CyberGhost offers 10 Gbps servers and the WireGuard protocol, so I expected only a minimal speed drop.

But compared to Surfshark, NordVPN, or ExpressVPN, CyberGhost performed much more slowly. The download speed drop was significant on both local and international servers. As a result, we can’t expect smooth streaming or uninterrupted file downloads and transfers.

CyberGhost Servers

Servers Locations

CyberGhost VPN has 11,500+ servers across 100 countries, a wide global server footprint. Like most VPN providers, its servers are spread across four regions: the Americas, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East & Africa.

The VPN has strong coverage in Europe and North America. CyberGhost expanded its network in 2024 by adding servers in countries like Bolivia, Peru, Myanmar, and Nepal. In India, however, it currently provides only one virtual server location based in Mumbai.

RAM Servers

This VPN’s infrastructure runs on RAM-only servers. Therefore, it stores runtime data only in RAM, a volatile memory. When the system is rebooted, all sensitive data is wiped out. Even if the server has been seized, no data can be recovered later. 

Obfuscated Servers

There is no stealth mode or obfuscated server support in CyberGhost VPN. Obfuscated servers are specialized features that hide VPN traffic to help bypass restrictions in highly restrictive regions where VPN usage is banned.

When I contacted the support team, they confirmed that CyberGhost will not work in China, Iran, or the UAE.  So, it’s not a reliable choice for highly restricted regions.

Dynamic or Static IP Address

By default, CyberGhost assigns shared IP addresses. These are dynamic IPs and are used by multiple users at the same time. Since the IP address changes each time you connect, it becomes difficult to track activity back to a single user.

CyberGhost also offers dedicated IP addresses as an add-on feature. A dedicated IP is a unique address assigned only to you and remains the same across all devices you use. This feature costs around ₹200/month with a 2-year plan. CyberGhost currently offers dedicated IP servers in 21 locations.

CyberGhost Streaming and Gaming Performance

When it comes to streaming performance, CyberGhost is not a strong option. It offers dedicated streaming servers. Since it has decent server coverage in North America, I expected smooth access to the Netflix US library. As usual, it unblocked Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and BBC, but the speeds were quite slow.

For Indian OTT platforms, this VPN is unreliable, even if it provides servers in India. CyberGhost failed to stream Zee5, SonyLIV, and JioCinema. Overall, the performance in my home region was hit-or-miss.

On the gaming side, CyberGhost was reliable on nearby servers. When I connected to a Vietnam server and played Smash Karts, the ping was around 68 ms. I faced no major lag or interruptions. But the VPN struggles with competitive gaming on long-distance servers.

P2P Torrenting

CyberGhost VPN is safe for torrenting, but it isn’t fast. It supports P2P file sharing on major clients like qBittorrent, uTorrent, and BitTorrent. However, it does not offer a port forwarding feature.

The major drawback is speed. Performance was quite slow, and I wasn’t satisfied with the seeding efficiency or overall connectivity. 

Privacy

Privacy Policy

CyberGhost maintains a transparent privacy policy on its website. It clearly explains its data storage practices, how user data is collected, the security measures in place, and more. Like most VPN providers, it also collects minimal account and service-related information. 

No-logs Policy

CyberGhost VPN states that it does not monitor, log, or store user activity. According to the provider, it does not keep data such as IP addresses, browsing history, VPN server usage, DNS queries, downloaded files, or connection logs. 

Security Audits

As of 2026, CyberGhost VPN has completed three independent security audits.

1. Deloitte Audit (2022): In September 2022, CyberGhost conducted its first independent audit. It validated the VPN’s server network, RAM-only infrastructure, dedicated IP system, and no-logs policy. Deloitte confirmed that the VPN does not store user activity data.
2. Deloitte Audit (2024): The second audit report was published in January 2024. Deloitte reviewed CyberGhost’s VPN infrastructure under ISAE 3000 standards. The audit confirmed that CyberGhost’s systems and processes were operating in line with its no-logs policy.
3. Deloitte Audit (2025): More recently, CyberGhost completed a third audit of its VPN infrastructure and no-logs implementation. The report again confirmed that the provider’s server configuration and internal practices were consistent with its no-logs claims.  

CyberGhost Headquarters

The jurisdiction of CyberGhost S.R.L. is in Bucharest, Romania. Romania is not part of any major intelligence-sharing alliance. As a result, there are no mandatory data retention laws that require this VPN provider to store user activity. 

Privacy Comparison

Similar to top VPN providers like NordVPN and Surfshark, CyberGhost maintains a transparent privacy policy. Its no-logs policy clearly states that the company does not store user activity or connection logs. The policy has been independently verified through audits conducted by the Big Four auditing firms.

Another advantage is its jurisdiction. CyberGhost is based in Romania, which is outside major intelligence-sharing alliances, unlike Netherlands-based Surfshark. Overall, CyberGhost appears to me to be a trustworthy VPN provider.

CyberGhost History

CyberGhost VPN began as a Romanian-German privacy startup. Co-founder Robert Knapp officially launched the VPN service in Romania in 2011. The company started publishing quarterly transparency reports to build trust and transparency from the early days.

In March 2017, London-listed company Crossrider plc acquired CyberGhost VPN in a $9.2 million deal. Crossrider rebranded itself as Kape Technologies in 2018 and acquired other VPNs like Private Internet Access (PIA) and ExpressVPN.

This VPN provider itself has maintained a positive track record with no major known scandals. However, some controversy exists because Crossrider was previously linked with adware and malware distribution campaigns. And CyberGhost was also one of the earliest VPN acquisitions made by the company, even before the Crossrider-to-Kape rebrand.

CyberGhost Security

Security Protocols

CyberGhost VPN supports only modern VPN protocols: OpenVPN, IKEv2, and WireGuard. The provider has phased out outdated protocols like PPTP and L2TP/IPsec.

On macOS, I noticed two protocols: IKEv2 and WireGuard. I preferred using WireGuard because it offers better speed and stronger security. However, on Android devices, IKEv2 was missing, even though it is often considered one of the best protocols for mobile users.

Instead, Android users can choose between OpenVPN and WireGuard. I preferred to set the protocol selection to Auto mode.

DNS Leak Test

I performed a DNS leak test on IPLeak.net, and CyberGhost passed the DNS leak tests successfully. As you can see in the screenshot above, the website showed the VPN server location instead of my real location. Plus, my original IP address remained hidden.

Kill Switch

CyberGhost VPN includes a built-in kill switch across all major platforms. It is automatically enabled when the VPN connection drops. However, on macOS and Android devices, I couldn’t manually toggle the kill switch on or disable it like with some other VPNs. The manual kill switch option is available for Windows only. 

Split Tunneling

CyberGhost VPN does not offer the same split tunneling functionality across all devices. For example, app-based split tunneling is only available on CyberGhost’s Android app. We can choose which apps bypass the VPN connection from “App Split Tunnel” under Settings.

On Windows, CyberGhost does not provide true split tunneling. Instead, users need to set Smart Rules. Under Smart Rules → Exceptions, we can whitelist websites to bypass the VPN connection.

Unfortunately, no split tunneling is available on macOS and iOS devices.

Security Comparison with Premium VPNs

NordVPN and Surfshark both offer standard VPN protocols like OpenVPN, IKEv2, and WireGuard. In fact, NordVPN includes two advanced proprietary protocols (NordLynx and NordWhisper). CyberGhost falls behind in this area.

The Kill Switch and Split Tunneling features are not available across all devices on CyberGhost. In contrast, Surfshark and NordVPN provide these features on all devices. Although CyberGhost offers DNS leak protection, that alone is not enough. 

Overall, in terms of security features, CyberGhost is behind premium VPN providers.

CyberGhost Pricing

This VPN offers a single plan with different subscription durations: monthly, half-yearly, and annual. To maximize savings, I would recommend choosing the CyberGhost biannual plan. It costs ₹3,614 in total.

Payment Options

To purchase a CyberGhost plan, users can pay using credit or debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc.) or PayPal. CyberGhost also accepts cryptocurrency payments through BitPay. In India, we can pay via Google Pay or Apple Pay.

Competitor Pricing

Among all premium VPN services, Surfshark is the most affordable one. You can purchase the Surfshark Starter 2-year plan for $47.04 (around ₹4,430).

It’s true that CyberGhost’s 2-year plan costs slightly less at ₹3,614. However, Surfshark is a more premium VPN service with stronger security features and better overall performance.

CyberGhost Customer Support

For any reputed VPN provider, users expect a quick and helpful customer support team, and CyberGhost delivers on that front. The company offers three main support channels: 24/7 live chat, knowledge base, and an email/ticket system.

Whenever I needed quick assistance regarding setup, troubleshooting, or service-related queries, I contacted the live chat support through their website. Initially, you’ll interact with an AI chatbot, but it quickly transfers you to a human agent upon request. The response time is fast, and the support agents are knowledgeable and helpful.

CyberGhost’s knowledge base includes detailed guides and FAQs. I referred to several of them while using the VPN. The language is simple, easy to understand, and the content is regularly updated.

For more complex issues, users can raise a support ticket through the CyberGhost support page. You’ll need to fill out a form explaining your issue before submitting it. But response time is usually slow, so I would not suggest this channel for urgent matters.

Devices

Users can download the CyberGhost VPN app from its website for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, routers, Smart TVs, Windows Security Suite, and Chrome extension.

Plus, it allows 7 simultaneous connections under a single subscription.

User Interface

The VPN apps provided by CyberGhost are simple and beginner-friendly across all platforms. I first downloaded the app on my Mac, and the overall setup process was smooth and easy.

On macOS, CyberGhost offers two modes: Mini Mode and Expandable Mode. The compact view reveals the connected server, data usage, protocol, and connection time, with a large connect/disconnect button. But I felt the settings menu looked a bit outdated compared to other VPN apps.

The Windows version is probably the best-designed desktop app from CyberGhost. Similar to macOS, users can switch between a compact mini view and the full taskbar interface. It also includes useful features like a Kill Switch toggle and split tunneling exceptions.

CyberGhost’s Android app looks more modern than the other versions. Its settings are well organized and easy to navigate. iOS users will also find the app clean and minimal, although it lacks features like split tunneling and Smart Rules.

Unlike NordVPN and Surfshark, CyberGhost has not introduced a full graphical interface for its Linux app. It still relies on a command-line setup, which may be better suited for advanced users.

Additional Features

1) Ad Blocker

Content Blocker is an add-on feature in CyberGhost VPN available on Windows, Android, macOS, and iOS devices. It works as a DNS-level filter that blocks trackers, ads, and malicious domains. To enable this feature, users need to go to the Privacy Settings in the app.

When I turned it on and visited a few news websites, it blocked a few display ads, not all. It claims to reduce pop-ups and banner ads and improve page loading speed. But I didn’t find CyberGhost’s ad blocker to fully replace dedicated browser ad-blockers.

2) Smart Rules

If you want to put your VPN on autopilot, Smart Rules can help. Here, you can choose when the VPN should enable, which apps/websites should use the VPN, when it should connect, and much more. But the rules and automation controls vary across devices.

For example, on my Mac, I can set up Wi-Fi Rules and Startup Rules. Under Wi-Fi Rules, I can control whether the VPN auto-connects on unsecured Wi-Fi networks. Under Launch Rules, I can enable auto-connect CyberGhost VPN on startup or choose applications that should automatically launch once the VPN connection is established.

On Windows and Android, users will also find an “Exceptions” feature alongside the rules above. With this, they can set split tunneling rules. But the iOS version does not include a Smart Rules interface.

3) NoSpy Servers

NoSpy servers are premium bare-metal servers. These servers are located inside CyberGhost’s own data center in Romania, and no external companies own or manage them. This reduces the risk of threats associated with third-party data centers.

Romania is also outside the 14 Eyes surveillance alliance. So, the infrastructure gets an additional layer of legal protection.

But not all 11,000+ servers in 100 countries offered by CyberGhost VPN are NoSpy servers. NoSpy servers are available only in Romania. Journalists, activists, and politically exposed individuals will benefit from this setup.  

4) Security Suite for Windows

For Windows users, CyberGhost provides a Security Suite bundle for complete device protection. Users get access to the VPN along with Antivirus, Privacy Guard, and Security Updater tools.

Antivirus (Intego) offers real-time malware protection. Meanwhile, the Security Updater scans installed applications and flags outdated or vulnerable software.

This Security Suite is available for Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems.

Performance & Reliability

I wouldn’t call CyberGhost a strong contender for everyday performance. Independent speed tests showed an over 50% baseline speed drop, and the ping rates were also quite high.

In streaming tests, CyberGhost didn’t perform very well with Indian OTT platforms. Many reviews also mention slower connection speeds on distant servers. That said, for gaming, the VPN performed fairly well on nearby servers.

CyberGhost VPN does offer standard security features like a kill switch and split tunneling, although these features aren’t available on all devices. Now, let’s look at its strengths and weaknesses.

CyberGhost Pros

1) Romania-Based Jurisdiction

CyberGhost VPN is based in Bucharest, Romania. Since Romania is outside the 5/9/14 Eyes alliances, the provider is not legally bound to keep or share user data under international surveillance agreements. 

2) Huge Server Network

This VPN service includes around 11,000 servers in 100+ countries. So, users are likely to find their preferred country or city options easily. On top of that, the provider also offers specialized servers for streaming and P2P. 

3) Audited No-Log Policy

Like many privacy-focused VPNs, CyberGhost follows a strict no-logs policy. The policy was independently audited by Deloitte in 2022, 2024, and 2025. No major security vulnerabilities or logging concerns were found.

4) Easy-to-Use Interface

Its user interface includes both compact and expanded taskbar modes. The home screen displays useful information like connection stats and active protocols, which can be helpful for new users. The left-side navigation bar offers easy server filters.

5) Extended Refund Policy

Most premium VPN providers offer a 14 to 30-day refund window. But this VPN provides a 45-day money-back guarantee on its long-term plans. So, users can try the service for one and a half months and still request a full refund.

6) Add-on Security Features

Apart from the VPN service, CyberGhost also offers security tools like Antivirus, Privacy Guard, and ID Guard for Windows users. Users on other platforms can access Content blockers and NoSpy servers. 

CyberGhost Cons

1) Below-Average Speed

With my 200 Mbps baseline connection, I noticed around a 70–80% speed drop on nearby servers. In international locations, the latency was even higher. So, this can impact streaming, browsing, and other online activities.

2) Ineffective Ad Blocker

CyberGhost comes with a built-in ad blocker that claims to block ads, trackers, and malware. But in reality, it didn’t block all ads. It mainly filtered some banner ads and pop-ups, while many other ads still appeared.

3) Poor Streaming Performance

I wasn’t able to unlock Indian streaming platforms while connected to CyberGhost VPN. Even though the provider offers Indian servers, audiences outside India can’t watch Disney+ Hotstar or JioCinema.

4) Kape Technologies Ownership 

CyberGhost VPN is currently owned by Kape Technologies. The company has faced criticism in the past because of its previous identity as Crossrider. Crossrider was associated with malware-related distribution and development activities.

5) Doesn’t Work in Censorship

CyberGhost does not offer stealth protocols or obfuscation features. Because of this, it struggles to bypass heavy internet censorship or the Great Firewall.

6) 7-Device Connection Limit

Most VPN providers now offer at least 10 simultaneous device connections. ExpressVPN supports up to 14 devices, while Surfshark offers unlimited connections. In comparison, CyberGhost’s 7-device limit feels restrictive for modern users.

7) Limited Split Tunneling Support

iOS and macOS users can’t choose specific apps to bypass the VPN connection for optimized speeds. On Windows, users can only whitelist URLs instead of selecting individual apps.

CyberGhost Alternatives

1) CyberGhost vs Surfshark

Surfshark is a Netherlands-based VPN service, popular in the market since 2018. Over the last 3-4 years, it has ranked at the top of my “Best VPN in India” list mainly because of its feature offering at a very affordable price. 

First, unlike CyberGhost, there is no device limit in this VPN. Next, kill switch, spoofing, and tunneling are available for all devices.

While CyberGhost cannot work in China, Surfshark offers Camouflage and NoBorders Mode for obfuscation. On top of that, you’ll get a Multi-hop connection, Static & Rotating IP, the most advanced ad blocker, Alternative ID, and many other advanced privacy tools.

2) CyberGhost vs NordVPN

After Surfshark, the most popular VPN for secure connections is NordVPN. It is based in Panama and offers several advanced security features. NordVPN users get access to two proprietary VPN protocols (NordWhisper and NordLynx) designed for better speed, stability, and security.

Its obfuscated servers are useful for users living in or traveling to countries with internet restrictions. For extra privacy and protection, the VPN also includes Onion Over VPN, Threat Protection, Dark Web Monitor, Double VPN, and Meshnet. Overall, NordVPN performs much better than CyberGhost in terms of speed, streaming, torrenting, and gaming performance.

Users can connect up to 10 devices simultaneously, unlike CyberGhost’s 7-device limit. Pricing starts at around ₹268/month ($2.82/month) on the 2-year plan with 4 extra months of access using my link.

3) CyberGhost vs ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is a premium VPN service that was launched in 2009. It is based in the British Virgin Islands, a privacy-friendly jurisdiction outside major surveillance alliances. The VPN includes all standard security features like an audited no-logs policy, kill switch, and split tunneling across all major devices.

Its proprietary Lightway protocol delivers faster and more stable connections than CyberGhost. For bypassing the Great Firewall restrictions or Middle Eastern countries’ censorship, ExpressVPN is more reliable than CyberGhost. Its Threat Manager and ad blocker are also more advanced and effective.

ExpressVPN’s long-term plan is slightly more expensive. The 2-year plan costs around ₹265/month ($2.79/month) for 28 months of access through my link. 

Why Should You Trust Me?

My interest in technology started back in 2015, and since then, I’ve been closely following how the digital world keeps developing. Conclusion 

Should You Buy CyberGhost VPN?

Many review websites rank CyberGhost as the No. 1 VPN available in India. But honestly, just like in previous years, I wouldn’t personally recommend CyberGhost VPN to my audience.

To be fair, CyberGhost is a decent Romania-based VPN provider. It offers standard features like a verified no-logs policy, AES-256 encryption, standard VPN protocols, etc. However, some important features still feel limited. For example, the kill switch works only in automatic mode, and split tunneling support is not available for all platforms.

The biggest issue I faced was the performance. Speeds were poor, streaming wasn’t reliable, and the built-in ad blocker failed to block many ads. On top of that, you can only connect 7 devices at a time. Most concerning part to me is that Kape Technologies acquired the VPN before the company rebranded itself from Crossrider.

So overall, I don’t find CyberGhost as reliable as some of its competitors. The main reason to consider it would be its vast network of 11,500+ servers across 100 countries.
